The short story, “Choices,” revolves around a straight couple who found a gestational surrogate that would enable them to start the family that they so desperately wanted. In many ways the proposed surrogate was perfect. However, there was one bit of unexpected information that the father-to-be learned which set off a downward spiraling chain of events; he discovered that the surrogate is a lesbian.
As a neocon, the father-to-be had major issues with that. He didn't want someone carrying his kid who, he believed, “chose” to be gay.
The husband’s attitude toward gays mirrors the attitude of a shrinking yet significant part of the global population. The United States Supreme Court’s decisions concerning DOMA and California’s Prop 8 was a giant leap forward for equality in the US, but real and lasting progress will require changing the hearts and souls of citizens worldwide.
That said; there is definitely a growing acceptance of the LGBTQ community, (sans Russia and Uganda). For the first time in recent recorded history mere tolerance, as a bellwether for the gay community, has rapidly morphed into a tepid acknowledgement of equality.
In Choices, the author attempts to show the world, through the eyes of the opposing parties, the likenesses between the two sides that neither chooses to acknowledge.
“It’s not always necessary to walk in someone’s shoes in order to understand them,” said, R. L. Persley. “But I do believe that it is necessary to have a sense of empathy that can be sourced from one’s own experiences. It is through understanding of self that we are best equipped to learn… Let the schooling begin.”
