Florence Knightley is shamelessly rejected by her own mother, who despises her daughter’s blemished looks. Such an ugly duckling is a shame to the house of Knightly among society’s more refined peers. When the young woman turns eighteen her father decides it is high time his daughter marry, but who would even consider such an imperfect girl? It is a troubling question. A passing reference in Regency court to the reclusive Lord Albert Errol, Duke of Whittington, provides a solution. Stewart Knightley approaches the mysterious Duke with an offer to restore his lost fortunes. In return he will take the hand of Florence. Thus begins an unlikely journey that will transform the duckling to a swan. In this original Regency fairytale the classic parable of the Ugly Duckling takes a decidedly romantic Regency turn.

I liked this story a lot. I was able to feel extremely empathetic due to the excellent character development. Unfortunately although this is a retold fairy tale, I feel the story wasn't based on grounded reality. This is because although Florence was a extremely bidable and obedient child during her youth, no child I know can resist doing something forbidden. The lure for an intelligent child is too much. She must have been a saint not to eventually looked into a mirror, if only to verify the scars on her face. Or looked into a mirrored surface like water or a window and seen her reflection.
***** spoiler ahead *****
I doubt any so called "gentleman" of the upper ten thousand of this time period would agree to marrying a scarred woman let alone a duke. Ms. McColl portrays the duke as a kind and thoughtful man. But I doubt that even he would have a child that might inherit a hare lip and cleft palate as the story proposes. Especially as they had no idea that it can be inherited and most would believe it would be. The typical reaction to this physical defect is that of her mother. If allowed, she would have quietly given Florence to a poor house. Today hare lip and cleft palate can usually be fixed with surgery.
Overall I enjoyed this book and feel that the few detours into the realms of the unbelievable are acceptable and easily excused. I would recommend this story to any fairy tale retelling addict.
Addendum: Just read some other comments and their criticism for the mother is warranted but not realistic. They are judging her on modern day standards and assumptions that EVERY woman will love their child no matter what. Even in our time, not all women can love their children no matter what.
Although I do agree with the comment that the intelligent child actually accepted 'busy' for 18 years is a bit much. Too bad the mother's behavior would have been acceptable behavior for her time period.

Could not finish it. The characters were not believable. The situation was not believable. What the husband pulls when the baby is born was incredible cruel.
I chose this book because it was a clean romance. I also like fairytales. I used to dream I was in a fairytale romance. It is love like no other. I also like Charity McColls books. Wonderful.
I came across this book and I'm glad I did. I look forward to reading more stories from this author.
Kinda basic and unrealistic characters- deleted this one from my after the first few chapters.
It's a lovely story, a Fairytale, I loved it. Florence and Albert show a great inner strength.
This is a short novella about Miss Florence Knightly and Lord Albert Earl, Duke of Wittingham. It is a true fairytale but who doesn't love one of those? I loved this book and I highly recommend it.
Beautiful Christian retelling of The Ugly Duckling! Truly should make us grateful for everything The LORD has done for us! I highly recommend! Thanks! Enjoy!
